Guevara had not gained the support by the Bolivian Communist party that he had hoped to, and the U.S.-backed Bolivian army was too strong for Guevara. His camp was surrounded by 1,800 Bolivian soldiers. He was shot, and brought to a mud schoolhouse where he refused to talk. The next day, Bolivian President Rene Barrientos ordered that Che be executed. -- source link
