etherealdany: Daenerys, mother to thousands, from Astapor to Lys to Old Volantis to Qarth to the Dot
etherealdany: Daenerys, mother to thousands, from Astapor to Lys to Old Volantis to Qarth to the Dothraki Sea. And notice that these are the refugees of Astapor who are calling out to Dany, once again showcasing that the Astapori slaves (and now freedmen) are not from a monolithic, singular “Astapori culture” but rather are colonized people who were kidnapped from their homes (Qarth, Lys, Volantis, the Dothraki Sea) and forcefully enslaved in Astapor itself by the remnants of the Old Ghiscari empire. I’ve said before that Dany’s people represent a unity of humanity in both suffering and triumph, and this further proves it. I’m also wondering how anyone could read lines like this and still conclude that Essos = all brown people and the slaves = all brown people. Most of the ethnic groups mentioned here––Ghiscari, Lysean, Volantene, Qartheen, and even Westerosi––are “white” (the Lysean and Volantene are Valyrian, to be even more specific). Never once have the books portrayed the slaves as helpless “brown” people. They’ve always been from a variety of ethnic groups and regions in Essos, with those regions themselves being phenotypically and ethnically diverse, and the Ghiscari themselves are white and ethnically close to the Valyrian culture because of the Valyrian Empire. -- source link
