DIY Foam Core Display Shelves / Risers1. Supplies: Foam Core Sheet(s), Cutting Mat, Metal Ruler (or Quilting Square, which I used), Glue Gun, Glue Sticks, Pencil, Razorblades or an X-Acto Knife. I have a measuring tape too just in case. Not shown: mock up of your finished shelves and all the parts you’ll need to make it. Here’s mine.2. Using the ruler and pencil, draw out all the pieces to cut.3. Cut out your pieces. I’ve detailed here the side supports; sometimes the blade just doesn’t cut cleanly through the corners, so flip your board and freehand the cuts until the board pops free.4. Lay out all your parts and ensure you’ve got everything you’ll need! (I have a back piece shown here but in the end I opted not to use it because my items aren’t heavy enough to need it.)5. Begin assembling your shelves by gluing one of the widest shelf slats (tops) onto one side, letting the glue set, and then gluing it to the other side. I reinforced each slat with a bead of glue on the back/underside.6. Continue adding all the other shelf slats one at a time, and then add the front pieces. (I chose to put mine on in this order for the view from the front, but this caused a gap at the bottom of the unit. I trimmed the side and center supports freehand until it was level again. Oops.)7. Add in center supports if your unit is particularly long! I had to do this because my unit is 22″ long and this also helped to fix the little gaps in between some of the shelves.8. Admire your new, CHEAP display shelves! This project didn’t take long for me, but I wasn’t trying to do the best job, either. If you took your time with each pencil line and cut, it could easily take a few hours, but I’m pretty sure I finished mine under an hour. And the cost is great compared to buying plastic/acrylic risers! I had most of the supplies needed on hand, so all this shelf cost me was about $3.00, $2.00 for the foam core board and $1.00 for new glue gun sticks! This is great for temporary displays, displays for selling small items at convention tables, or for organizing lots of small figures and collectables on a bookcase like I am!I hope this little DIY Tutorial can help someone who is a neat-freak like me and wants to display items in a cheap but organized way~! I’ll post a photo of my finished shelves tomorrow!♥ BEAST -- source link
