feistyphocion: One thing I noticed in the movie Gettysburg (1993) for the first time, after I’ve watched the movie God knows how many times. It’s the death of Alonzo Cushing. He’s here with his second-in-command, Frederick Füger. Füger held up the badly wounded Cushing and passed his orders on to the men. Running dangerously low on ammunition as the advancing Confederates drew nearer, Cushing managed to exclaim, “I will give them one more shot!” He was then wounded a final time, this time in the head. Füger lay the young lieutenant on the ground at the base of one of their cannons, and he was the one who fired the final shot. For this action, Füger received the Medal of Honor in 1897. Cushing would not receive his posthumous Medal of Honor until 2014. The film also shows Füger firing the shot…directly at Confederate General Richard Brooke Garnett. -- source link
