A former chapel, the theatre’s previous life was evident in the boxes – which looked like confessionals – and in the angels over the orchestra. The content of the plays performed there, however, were far from sacred. The Grand Guignol specialized in gory dramatizations of brutal torture and death, and the fainting of audience members was such a common occurrence that the theater kept a doctor on staff. -- source link
