S4. Edyn from Cookie Jar Entertainment’s Magi Nation. Edyn is one of our trio of protagonists for this cartoon. She is the daughter of the leader of Vash Naroom and an apprentice spellcaster. Like the surprising majority of the Moonland’s population she is also ambiguously brown, which is lovely in a genre like fantasy where poc are frustratingly rare. Also, while we rarely see it outside of two episodes, she has stressed induced asthma that she deals with through meditation and breathing exercises. Edyn is the person who kickstarts the plot of Magi-Nation. After growing up with her father waiting for the Final Dreamer of prophecy to come save the Moonlands, Edyn decides that she’s the chosen one and even declares herself so to the most evil magi in the world. In regards to her personality, Edyn is incredibly stubborn, snarky, and her confidence is boundless. She prefers to make friends rather than enemies and will help whoever needs her help, but she’s no fool. Edyn actually develops solid friendships with every recurring non-evil female character on the show, even becoming a mentor to her friend Inara and teaching her the basics of spellcasting. An interesting thing about Edyn is that she cries the most of the three protagonists. She sheds tears of sadness when she looses her father to the darkside, she sheds tears of joy for her best friend getting reunited with his own lost father. She even gets to tear up when angry about the suggestion to leave her home city to be ransacked and burned by villains. Not once is her crying portrayed as weakness, no one’s tears are in this show, rather its just portrayed as a natural response to the circumstances. -- source link
