A flag in the wind will billow only if the wind speed and direction. A similar thing happened to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940. During construction, many noted that the bridge often moved up and down in the wind, which earned it the nickname, “Galloping Gertie.” The bridge was open for only 5 months before it spectacularly collapsed on a particularly windy day.
