There was an annular eclipse visible from the Pacific Ocean today. An astronomical eclipse occurs when the Earth, Sun, and Moon are aligned so that either the Earth or Moon blocks the light from the Sun. A solar eclipse, the type that happened today, appears when the Moon blocks out most of the Sun from a certain part of Earth. This causes a “ring of fire” effect, where we see only a thin ring of the Sun. Don’t stare! It’s still the Sun, after all. The second type is a lunar eclipse, characterized by the reddish appearance of the Moon. Here, the Earth blocks most of the light that hits the Moon from the Sun: which, if you didn’t already know, is the only way we see the Moon! It’s not luminous; it just serves as a galactic mirror for the Sun’s rays! (Image credit to flickr, and No Apologies.) -- source link
