We’ve all seen a reference to guitarists smashing their instrument after a particularly raucous song. But where did it start? Perhaps the real question is, with Who did it start? The Who was the first group to gain a reputation for smashing guitars: Pete Townshend, pictured above, destroyed his implements many a time to conclude concerts. But this is blown away by Keith Moon, the band’s drummer. Moon, during the U.S. television premiere of the British band, loaded his drums with explosives.
