Most chess pieces’ names are obvious, but the rook’s name doesn’t give any insight into what it represents in chess’s figurative army. The word’s origin can be traced back to the Persian word rukh, which means "chariot". It also evolved into the modern word Roc, the mythical giant bird of prey.
