August 26, 1918) is an African-American mathematician whose work at NASA included calculating the trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for the Project Mercury spaceflights that launched Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit. She also helped calculate the trajectory for the 1969 Apollo 11 mission and the 1970 Apollo 13 mission.
