archaicwonder: Celtic Coin with a Raven Riding a Serpent-Tongued Horse This gold stater, struck circa 150-50 BC, comes from the Leuci Celtic people of Gaul. The obverse shows a stylized male head. The reverse has the image of a raven riding a galloping horse that has a serpent-like tongue. Below the horse is a cruciform with five ornaments. The Leuci were a Gallic tribe, recorded to have lived in the southern part of what is now Lorraine (map) . They are mentioned by Julius Caesar as a people supplying wheat to the Roman army in 58 BC, along with the Lingones and Sequani. Strabo in his Geographica describes the Leuci and a part of the Lingones dwelling “above” the Mediomatrici -- source link
