cassanabaratheon:܀ history meme :: and then some ܀ ladies [1/?] Poppaea Sabina (30? AD – 65 AD) ↳ Empress of Rome Known for her beauty, Poppaea was, at first, the mistress of the Emperor Nero whilst she was married to his friend Otho. It was said that she urged Nero into murdering his mother because she would not support Nero in divorcing his wife and that later she convinced him to murder Claudia Octavia once she was in exile. Modern historians question Poppaea’s involvement with these events but, in any case, she was pregnant around the time in which they married – prompting another line of argument for Nero’s divorce as his marriage to Claudia Octavia had not resulted in any children. When Poppaea gave birth to a child, she was raised up to the status of Augusta. Exactly how Poppaea died is unknown. The popular tale is that Nero kicked her to death when she was pregnant with their second child after she criticised him on overspending or just out of rage (some even suggest an accident). Modern thought is that perhaps she died from complications during pregnancy or a miscarriage. Her death had a profound effect on Nero who mourned her deeply. Her embalmed and spiced body was placed in the mausoleum of Augustus and he gave her a great state funeral and eulogy. It is said that Nero’s attachment to the boy Sporus was because he resembled Poppaea. By contemporary historians, she evoked a second Cleopatra and Poppaea has been remembered for her “extravagance and sex appeal [which] were the trademark characteristics of all Roman femme fatales.” -- source link
