mochibuni:ajisaitea:nerdyfacts:Nerdy Fact #1773: Though it was previously explained in the Star Wars Expanded Universe that the Sith’s lightsabers were colored red because of synthetic Kyber crystals, Disney’s new Star Wars universe canon retconned this. Instead, red sabers are now created when a lightsaber’s crystal’s bond is broken with its Jedi (usually upon their death). Since those on the dark side don’t have a connection to the crystals like Jedi do, the crystal “bleeds” as it’s manipulated by a Sith, thus turning it red.(Source.)@mochibuniI really disliked that Disney changed this. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m largely a movie only fan, and to me that doesn’t really make sense, and story wise this is just make them even MORE like villains!!1eleventy! At the same time, I appreciate that it’s symbolic. And uh…the Sith are just going around stealing dead jedi lightsabers? Or does them turning to the dark side count as dying?I really preferred the synthetic crystals explanation, it made a lot more sense, but idk if you consider the kyber crystals as semi-organic (and I want to say that Catalyst didn’t really say that they were, but gave the impression that they were something more, certainly), I guess I could handwave it. It just… feels really a ham-fisted way to explain the color and make us really, really understand “but the Sith are evil!111!!!” like we hadn’t already picked up on that, when synthetic crystals and/or ~*SITH AESTHETIC*~ seems a lot more reasonable. -- source link
