arthistry: Another example of spolia used to bolster a ruler’s prowess, the Arch of Constantine was built in Rome along the Via Appia between 312 and 315. The Via Appia was the main road in Italy that connected the papal strongholds of the north with the Emperor Constantine’s residence in the south. The erection of the Arch was a showing-off of Constantine’s power, wealth, and importance - it acted as an unmissable reminder to the hostile papacy that Constantine was most certainly a force to be reckoned with. The Arch combines spolia from the reigns of Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius, artfully combined with the elements that were created specially for the Arch. -- source link
