New York From a Notebook The buildings give me reverse vertigo, making the sidewalk swim and me flounder. New York makes me feel drunk when I look up. They really do have the steam rising up out of manholes like there’s some ancient evil underneath the surface. It makes the city feel ominous when the streetlights come on. Mystery. New York fights the snow, every shopfront a battleground where front lines are drawn betwen the white and the black of the tarmac. It’s all gone by morning. Every building sits next to the one beside it like an unruly neighbour, the shorter ones resentful and the taller ones smarmy and proud. I saw one alleyway where one side had the buildings covered in dappled light, like they were underneath trees, but it was just the reflection of a skyscraper. The subway is bigger than the Tube, but it feels swollen. Each traincar has enough space inside that people don’t have to get too close. As much as the English like our privacy, there’s a friendly intimacy to underground animosity. New York’s transit system feels disconnected in comparison. Every individual headed in their own direction. You can look down an avenue and see the length of Manhattan, give or take. You can turn ninety degrees and be lost in the shadow of a skyscraper. It’s simultaneously claustrophobic and agoraphobic. It’s a beautiful confusion. Every time I speak to a stranger their eyes flash for a moment. I like to think it’s barely concealed excitement. But then again, I would. I think I’m hamming up my accent. There is a red suede waistcoat in Bloomingdales. It is $1500. I want it. Bagels really are better in New York. They’re actually edible. Nothing feels quite new, no matter what street you’re on. Everything is scuffed and dirty, worn in like a favourite toy. It’s as if the new was just wrapping, something shiny to attract the attention of all these people, before it was torn off to reveal the prettiness underneath. There’s ugliness, and more than a little beauty. -- source link
