thought i’d share an aspect of my life that’s been keeping me busy lately, but that i haven’t shared much… about a year ago, i started getting involved in local politics. i know, not so glamorous. but california is in a housing crisis and the entire planet is experiencing a climate crisis, and there’s a lot that cities can do to change that. but you have to start by understanding the history of restrictive local zoning codes, the government subsidization of highways and car-dependent sprawl. we get upset when charming old buildings are sold and developers build tall apartment complexes in their place, but do we get upset when people are priced-out of their homes and forced to move further away from their jobs, commuting for long hours because some people want to protect their property values, their treasured views? or worse, because they don’t want certain “undesirable” people as their neighbors? we need more housing near jobs and public transit. we need to reduce our car dependence, and our cities need to fix local zoning laws to allow this to happen. what is your city doing? are people welcomed into the community, or are current homeowners shutting them out? i’m saying yes in my back yard!
