Draco lay staring at the wall with dry hot eyes, with something old and familiar clawing up the back of his throat: rage, pounding against the inside of his skull, and the curling thoughts of how to—how to hurt Harry back, how to get revenge, and he shuddered all over and sat up.He stared at Harry, at the back of his neck where the hair was curling damply, and forced himself to say, “Harry. Don’t—don’t come again.” — Excerpt from Slithering by @astolat____This little fancomic is of an amazing scene from Slithering by @astolat!I had to tweak some lines to make it work for the comic, but I really hope that the meaning was preserved!! I love this scene so much. I’ve come back to this fic so many times and always relish reading this part! And HM . MGM. okay more rambling about just how much I adore this scene below the cut. No real spoilers for the fic (though it would be confusing if you haven’t read it), but I will be screaming a lotThis part of the fic always got to me, because this is where Draco, who throughout the entirety of the fic is working towards regaining control of his life, relinquishes control and lets go. Draco decides to give up on Harry, who he’s been determinedly chasing after for months. This conscious decision, is very, VERY “It is our choices that show what we truly are”-esque. Draco sees that Bellatrix was not born evil, but she ultimately made the choices that made her so. Draco had the luxury of facing decisions with very poignant, polarizing outcomes, but more often than not, the choices that define us aren’t so obvious. Here, Draco’s faced with a decision that doesn’t seem as significant as the ones he had to make during the war. But as he thinks of Bellatrix, Draco’s able to see that the decision he makes in this scene is a tipping point one way or another.I also found this part so interesting because earlier on in the fic when Draco was explaining to Harry where Coil the Majestic Snake came from, he insisted she was of no danger to anyone. The fact she was born from Nagini shouldn’t determine her capacity for evil. But here, Draco is adamant that he was born with the disposition that makes it easy for him to be evil. He thinks of Bellatrix, who was young and full of open smiles once, making the decisions that lead her to Voldemort’s side. Perhaps, had it not been for factors outside of himself during the war (his parents’ love for him trumping their allegiance to Voldemort, Snape intervening, and Harry ending the war when he did), Draco’s capacity for evil would have been realized too. He sees that even without a war hanging over his head, even as he’s rethinking those twisted ideologies he’s been raised with, it’s so easy for him to fall into the motions of manipulating and monopolizing. He feels that old, hungry anger raging in him to get things his way. But the darker parts of Draco are a fundamental part of who he is. A part that may never change. A part he may not even want to change. So when Harry rejects Draco because of what he’s done and because of which side he was on, who is Draco to contradict him? Draco may not be on the dark side anymore, but in this scene, he is resigned to know he’ll never be on the side of the light either, where Harry stands and thrives. And so this scene PERFECTLY sets up Harry taking the next step, because all further steps Draco would take (even if they aren’t as manipulative as the step he just backed away from) would do nothing to dispel the doubts he has about their relationship.Which.. aaAGH is great. It all flows so well. This scene isn’t a long one, but it’s a huge turning point for both characters. Lovely. LOVELY *slams fists onto table, sobbing* LOVELY -- source link
