vintageindianclothing:Further to my previous post, the dress reform movement initiated by Dharmapala also extended to male attire (Arya Sinhala). Amongst the list of rules was the prohibition of forms of Portuguese and Dutch attire and the adoption of the sarama (sarong) along with an upper covering. The sarama was sought to be distinguished from forms of sarong amongst the Malay and Javanese. While often white, patterned cloth also seems to have been used as for this Sinhalese man in the postcard. This was often worn with a kamisa (the shirt as seen here). The juta (shoes) and a parasol completes the attire. Pic Source: Typical Pictures of Indian Natives, FM Coleman. -- source link
