dailyadventureprompts: Heist: The Lost Treasures of Alfreth’s IsleIt’s a shame we have to sneak past so many scholars on this job: its sure be one for the ages. Lets test out my new heist system, see how it works at your table! It’s rogue week over at @dailyadventureprompts, and what self-respecting rogue isn’t looking for their next big score? Setup: Though only one of a number of petty warlords of his age, King Alfreth labored to secure his place in history as the most dignified, saintlike, and righteous rulers to ever grace the continent… mainly by being the one who was employing scribes to write his legends down while all his contemporaries languished in illiteracy. A prolific raider of rich and fertile lowlands, Alfreth eventually needed a place to stash all his loot, choosing an isolated mountain valley and using cunning stonework to flood all but a highly defensible isle upon which he built a fortified vault. This vault became the endowments of his descendants, eventually expanding into his dynasty’s personal treasury and a monastery for the same order of scribes that he originally funded with his largesse. Even after Alfreth’s line was displaced on the throne, the vault that he had constructed was too well guarded, forcing the new administration to make-nice with the scribblers and garrisoned soldiers who’d suddenly come into stewardship of a vast fortune while their lord died gloriously out in a field. In the centuries since this changeover the treasure vault has barely been touched, and the Eremitic order ( as it calls itself) has become a bit of a disorganized bank, financing out some of it’s stores while vast troves lay forgotten and buried beneath the isle’s numerous expansions. All that money guarded by nothing but a few dottering historians? Taking it from them is going to be almost too easy. Adventure Hooks: Short of climbing up the frigid mountainside, there’s only one way in or out of Alfreth’s isle: a cavernous passage carved through the mountain that’s flooded with glacial melt. Bonechillingly cold and freezing solid in winter, the party will need a reason to get a vessel through this highly guarded passage. Fortunately for them, an infestation of giant underdark spiders have found their way into the caves, and the Eremitic Order’s desperate need for monster hunters/exterminators provides the perfect excuse. the isle itself is one of the largest libraries on the continent, a true bookworm’s paradise should they mange to earn themselves an invitation. Most of the tomes and relics are chained to their shelves and doggedly watched, but a few of these rare volumes are so valuable that they’re kept out of reach of all but the most trusted scribes. Why not use that isolation to your advantage, especially when a disgruntled and oft passed over member of the order starts feeding you the isle’s floorplans and her own particular reading list. So many forgotten little vaults, so little time: The party will need to make the best use of their shore-leave as possible, hitting what dungeons they can while maintaining their excuses, possibly sneaking out to commit heists in between whatever legitimate business called them to the isle. Among their many delves into the isle’s forgotten corners, they encounter a construct seemingly made out of the pages of a legendary spellbook… a challenging foe to be sure, but an even greater challenge awaits once it’s revealed that this construct was powered by the soul of a wicked litch, one the thieves have unleashed upon the world. -- source link
