Hi! It is my birthday! And here’s a little cartoon me self-portrait for this year. This is the last year in my 30s and I am looking forward to it! The last year was one of the roughest years of my life. As most of you know, my younger brother and only sibling died four days before my 38th birthday. He is still very present in our life and thoughts but his physical absence here is very felt especially in the early days of August. But this was also a very good year in other ways, and it’s hard sometimes to talk about how neither the good nor the bad cancels the other out and that joy and grief are things you can feel simultaneously. I bought my own very tiny but very cozy home this year, which is something that I’m very proud to have accomplished AND I got married to basically my favorite person in the universe, and we are continuing down the path of creating a life together that focuses on creating joy and art and things that matter to us both, and I couldn’t be happier for that part of my life. So, it’s a year that has had both very high highs and very low lows, and I’m eager to see what is down the road ahead for me at 39, 40, and beyond! If you would like to do something for my birthday this year, what I would like is for you to go outside your comfort zone to do something to support a marginalized group that you yourself are not a part of, preferably one you have not really done much to support in the past. For example, If you are a Christian, consider donating to CAIR. If you are cisgender, consider donating to the Trans Lifeline. And so on! You can also do something to show support, for example, if you are white, you could buy a Black Lives Matter button from a Black-owned shop and commit to wearing it regularly. If you can’t afford to give money, posting signal boosts asking other people to give, or committing to attend an event to learn about an issue that doesn’t affect you personally, or writing on your own blog about why it is important for people like you to care about an issue that affects a group you are not part of is also ok! Thank you so much, and thanks very much for all the birthday wishes, and for everything you do every day to make the world a better place for the people in it. -- source link
