rowanofarc:as much as I obviously love rowan, there are aspects of her politics that bother me. to imply that a utopian queer future must be fluid, and to imply that “strict” sexual identities are somehow restrictive or less progressive, is to play into the widespread lesbophobic sentiment that presents lesbians as archaic and regressive for not being sexually open to men. the same goes for saying “femmes” when you mean women or “femmephobia” when you mean misogyny, because this plays into the exclusion of butch lesbians, and the lesbophobic claims that butch lesbians have toxic masculinity or masc privilege or whatever. it’s important to include woman-aligned nonbinary people, but masc/fem has never been an axis of oppression. a woman whose gender expression is more butch or masc but who nonetheless identifies as a woman does not oppress a man whose gender expression is more feminine but who nonetheless identifies as a man. I know Rowan is a kid and still learning and growing and I think she’s hella smart. But I do think she’s been influenced by some toxic and rather homophobic rhetoric from the circles she’s in. I just wanted to make a post about this to see if any of her other fans have been bothered by it! Some people are fluid and some people aren’t. It’s important for people at any point along that spectrum to understand and accept the others as they are. It can be hard for people who only really understand being one thing to truly grasp the concept of fluidity. The same sometimes seems to apply to fluid people not understanding the idea that some people are just one thing. Fluid people tend to regard non-fluidity as oppressive or restrictive because in their life it’s something that they were forced into when they didn’t want it. I don’t see anything particularly malicious from Rowan here, but I can see how the statement was a tad thoughtless, not fully considering the range of experiences that other people might have had. -- source link
