ayearinlanguage: A Year in Language, Day 23: Romanian Not to be confused with Romansh or Rromani, Romanian is a Romance language, specifically an Eastern Romance language spoken in Romania and Moldova. In the same way that French or Romansh are Romance languages that have been influenced by Germanic languages, Romanian is a Romance language that has been influenced by Slavic languages. Like all Eastern Romance languages it is a direct descendant of military Latin spoken in the legions, whose slang and military jargon persist in Romanian etymology. Romanian retains more of the Latin case system than most modern Romance languages, though uniquely marks the definite and indefinite articles (English “the” and “a/an” respectively) as a suffix rather than a preceding word or prefix. This pattern is also followed by most Scandinavian languages. Romanian is the language of one of the internets first viral videos, still the third most watched video of all time; the “Numa Numa Dance”, which uses the song Dragostea Din Tei, which literally means “Love from the linden trees”. The infamous “numa numa yay” chorus is more accurately transcribed “nu mă, nu mă iei” literally “not me, not me take” meaning “(you) don’t (want) to take me”. -- source link
