retronator: New GIFs from Steel Assault, looking better than ever!A lot has happened since I talked about this upcoming shooter during its 2015 Kickstarter. The original NES look was updated early on to a smoother, even more colorful 16-bit style under the direction of Weston Tracy (you know him from the gorgeous platformer Savior). Even though Weston isn’t working on the project any more, other amazing people were brought on the team, including Fabian ‘Vierbit’ Jastremski (a legendary background pixeler and first artist I featured on the blog), Walter ‘Shingo’ Samperi (lead artist on @breakingbytes’ shmup Xydonia), and Raul Vivar (lead animator on Blasphemous). On the gameplay side, the trademark ability of your robotic suit became the 8-directional zipline that can be stretched between any two platforms. That and plenty of other old-school bullet hell action hint at an arcade classic in the making. Development has been long and a bit troubled (which one isn’t?), but the game is finally in the end stretch and planned to hit PC and Switch later this year (other consoles afterwards). I’ll drop you another line when the Steam page goes live (should be soon). -- source link
