A German SM U-118 U-Boat lays washed ashore on Hastings beach. While it was being towed through the English Channel to be broken up for scrap, a storm hit and the ship broke off from its tow boat and drifted away. It later ran aground on the beach at Hastings. The wreck quickly became a popular tourist attraction. Eventually, it was broken up and the pieces removed and sold for scrap. It is believed that some of the keel from the submarine may still lie underneath the sand of the beach. 5th of April 1919. -- source link
