gregorygalloway:vintageeveryday:Photos of gay activists protesting outside Trump Tower for homeless people living with HIV/AIDS in 1989.On 31 Oct. 1989, protesters from the AIDS activist group ACT UP New York’s Housing Committee descended on Trump Tower at 5th Avenue and 56th Street to draw attention to the lack of housing for homeless people with AIDS. Trump was targeted because Trump had received a $6.2 million tax abatement (almost $12.5 million in today’s value) to construct the building. It was money, ACT UP argued, that might have been used to turn vacant city-owned buildings into housing facilities. “Donald Trump gets richer while homeless people get sicker,” one flier at the protest stated.Police put a stop to the protest and arrested 6 people on charges of illegal trespass (some had entered Trump Tower), disorderly conduct (threw fliers around the lobby of Trump Tower), and resisting arrest. -- source link
