Scientists are now working on another way to improve tornado prediction. It involves using gravity waves. A gravity wave are waves found in the atmosphere that are created by some disturbance like changes in wind. Meteorologists at the University of Alabama are studying the relationship between gravity waves and tornadoes in order to gain insight in the formation of tornadoes and hopefully provide more warning time. The researchers have found that a gravity wave push down and compress a thunderstorm, resulting in faster rotation. Further research could allow us to identify the characteristics of the gravity waves that produce tornadoes and then improve predictions and warning times. - JB For more info: http://www.sciencedaily.com/videos/2008/0805-knowing_where_tornadoes_will_strike.htm -- source link
