-Prince Khurram (commonly known as Shah Jahan) and his third wife Arjumand Banu Begum (given the title Mumtaz Mahal or “Jewel of the Palace” by her husband). In 1631, Shah Jahan was grief-stricken when Mumtaz died during the birth of their 14th child. He built the Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and completed in 1653.
