East Dart or Postbridge Clapper Bridge, Dartmoor, 27.12.17.The exact date of construction of this bridge type is unknown. Several academics pin down the prehistoric period to this style whilst others use the fact that ‘clapper’ is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word, ‘cleaca‘ meaning ‘bridging the stepping stones’ or the Latin ‘clapus, claperius’ meaning ‘of Gaulish origin’ to attach the early Medieval to their infancy. In reality, many have been reconstructed several times over through the centuries due to flooding and collapse and so it is likely we will never accurately know. There is no doubt that walking across one makes you feel like you are standing on an ancient structure and something special. -- source link
