Ripley’s Aquarium Humpback whale skeleton Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were once hunted to the brink of extinction, and have had a partial recovery after a 1966 moratorium. They range in size from 12-16m and weigh roughly 36,000kg (Females are slightly larger than the males). Humpback whales also spend half the year migrating up to 25,000km to breeding grounds.
