[Rena’s first sketches of Penny’s transition]One of the major things we decided when the two of us first began working on this project was that we wanted to tell stories we hadn’t seen in the DCU before. Part of what is so frustrating about any major fictional setting being reset continuously is that, along with throwing out many beloved characters and stories, the practice so often becomes an excuse to retrace stories that have already been done over and over again. We get retellings of the same origins, get the same romances, and often play this waiting game of the current comics catching up to where we were last left off only to be rebooted again. So on top of paying homage to the stories and characters that made us DC fans, we wanted to really dig into what stories could be told with these setups next. Penny Trevor – whose first centric story (Odyssey of the Amazons #0) was released earlier today – came from the two of us considering what stories we wanted to be told using the Wonder Woman characters and lore, and what our take on the Amazons would entail overall. Central to our take on the Amazons is a unique utopian ideal on a society that is founded on not only peace and love, but acceptance and sisterhood, which often gets left out of the core mission of the Amazons in many Wonder Woman runs. We’re going to play with the limits of those values with the unique culture of the Amazons, but we also felt like there is no corner of the DCU where exploration of gender, presentation, and sexuality is more at home than in Wonder Woman. In just the past year we’ve gotten to see wonderful conversations around Amazon queerness with Diana’s bisexuality, Hippolyta and Philippus’ longtime partnership, Nubia and Io’s recent romance, and the amazing addition of the first openly trans woman Amazon Bia.And born out of those talks came the story of Penny Trevor, a trans woman whose lifelong exploration of her identity, purpose, and eventually her gender finds itself very much literalized by fate when she lands on Paradise and finds herself in love with someone whose entire concept of gender is in opposition to everything she’s ever known. Writing and plotting with Penny has made us both fall in love with this AU version of the character and we’re very excited as she and more unique aspects of this AU come up.Thank you so much to @splendiferousblog for helping us with the concept and letting us bounce ideas off of you <3 -- source link
