book-of-flights: Springs of the river Cephissus, one of my favourite places on earth. Little is known about its history. The springs are surrounded and overlooked by the remains of an ancient pagan temple, possibly of river deities or nymphs such as the Naiads. It is likely it was destroyed by the Goths around the 5th century. Many of its stones were later used to build an early christian church which stands in ruins a little further off. Photos (especially mine) never do it justice. There’s something otherwordly about this place, the murmur of the icy water, the buzzing of the electric-blue dragonflies, the coolness of the huge platanus trees, the terrifying darkness from where the water springs, leading to the root of the mountain. It’s easy to understand why over the millenia people felt drawn to it and a place fit to worship their gods. -- source link
