ancientart:Antinous, the young lover of Roman emperor Hadrian. The life Antinous is shrouded in mystery, and his death, suspicious (for example, see the account of Cassius Dio, book LXIX). What is apparent, however, is that the love Hadrian felt for Antinous was great, and his death left him in all-consuming grief. So much so that Hadrian deified Antinous, elevating him to a god, constructed multiple temples and shrines to him, and founded the centre of the new cult, the city of Antinouspolis, next to the Nile, near where he had died.A fairly fitting post for today, I thought. The shown sculpture of Antinous dates to ca. AD 130–138. Courtesy of & can be viewed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Via their online collections: 2010.453. -- source link
