jw-waterhouse: The Orange Gatherers (ca. 1890), by J.W. WaterhouseAnother one of the paintings that Waterhouse made in Capri. He applied the techniques of Jules Bastien-Lepage, the founder of the 19th century Naturalism movement and George Clausen, one of his followers. The rural scenes with Italian children painted in warm colors, sold well in England. With the stairs, Waterhouse added his own hallmark. He was however not happy with the results and searched for new subjects. In January 1890, during his vacation, Waterhouse’s father died. This had a profound influence on him and starting in 1891, he drastically changed his style. -- source link
