nanshe-of-nina:Women’s History Meme || Queens (10/10)↬ Zabel I of ArmeniaParadoxically, soon after Levon I quarrelled with Raymond-Roupen, the relative who had enjoyed his favor for so long, and disinherited him, appointing his own daughter Zabel as his heiress. Honorius intervened on several occasions on behalf of diverse pretenders to the throne of Armenia…The bailey Constantine, who acted as regent, gave Zabel in marriage to Philippe, the fifth son of Bohémond IV, prince d’Antioche and comte de Tripoli, [and Plaisance Embriaco di Gibelletto]. Prior to his coronation, Philippe was made to promise that he would respect Armenian customs, especially the church rite. … However, since Philippe failed to keep his promise, in 1225 he met the same as his predecessor and was poisoned. The war which then erupted between Armenia and Antioche affected the future of the Latin Church in Cilica. The Latin bishops were again expelled from Tarsus and Mamistra, and Honorius’ intervention did not succeed in placating the regent and new catholicos. Not until the regent managed to marry Zabel off to his own son Hethum who was then crowned, did he think of renewing relations with the Apostolic See. The Latin archbishops returned to Cilica. — Armenia Christiana: Armenian Religious Identity and the Churches of Constantinople and Rome (4th–15th Century), Krzysztof Stopka -- source link
