In the end, their mother had to resort to drugging the boy secretly before he came anywhere near the dental practice. Mycroft’s own dentist in Pulborough had declined to treat the younger son after a rather nasty biting incident, so their mother had found a dentist in Worthing who specialised in treating autistic and developmentally challenged patients. He was one of the very few in the UK willing to use the papoose; the tight constriction pressure usually calmed the boy, according to Smithson*. Although it worries Mycroft, as the flaps are closed, Sherlock stops yelling and struggling; only his eyes boring into Mycroft with pure venom give any indication of his true state of mind at finding himself here at the dentist.“Tell me about the injury. How did it happen?” Smithson asks calmly.“From what I managed to get out of him, he said he was swinging on a rope tied to a tree branch, misjudged the angle and smacked into a fence post, face-first.*”Mycroft decides to leave out how Sherlock’s crying and refusal to be touched had complicated matters. By the time the boy had arrived back at Parham House, the wound had bled copiously. Mycroft had come running at the sound of Mrs Walter’s scream at the sight. The blood —it’s something that has always bothered Mycroft, especially when it has been pouring from his little brother. The wound on his mouth extended from the lip almost half an inch down his chin; apparently, the soft tissue had been sliced by something metal on the fencepost. The A&E at Worthing hospital had done what they could to stitch the area below the lip, but told him to get the boy’s teeth checked by his own dentist because the hospital’s dental staff did not include a paediatric specialist, let alone one used to working with autistic children. Mycroft wondered if this had simply been their desire to get the screaming ten-year-old out of the hospital as quickly as possible, as his cries were distressing other patients.Read the whole chapter - a one-shot story - here. It’s the story of how my Sherlock got the scar that we see on his adult face. -- source link
