art-of-swords: Ottoman Karabela Sword Dated: Beginning of the 18th century Measurements: Overall length 85 cm This is a seldom-encountered example of classic form produced in the Ottoman Court Workshops. With fine grips retained by three engraved silver bosses on either side, those on the obverse are set with rectangular garnets. The elaborately-modeled guard is made of silver with rolled quillons, chiseled, engraved and gilded and struck with the tugra of Sultan Ahmed III (r. 1703-1730). The wooden scabbard is covered in black leather with large silver mounts decorated en suite with the hilt and likewise hallmarked. The exceptionally broad and lightly-curved wootz blade comes with arching cloudbands chiseled at the forte and pronounced back edge. Source: Copyright 2013 © Auction Flex -- source link
