Welcome back to our blog - it’s a new year, the same team, and a new invigoration! The Homes Team is ready to take our design past the conceptual phase and start getting into the nitty gritty. Here’s what you missed:We traveled home to Rhode Island, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi for the holidays. Upon return, we met this semester’s beautiful new group of third years and spent a week doing “Neck Downs”. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, its a week of work that requires no thought, just our able bodies - hence the title. Some of us maintained past Rural Studio projects, provided housekeeping, or helped the Super Thesis students on their site. Pictured above, the Faunsdale site dog, Old Red, helped lay gravel and dig french drains all week. Thanks, dog. In Studio, we’ve been moving and grooving. We’re considering materiality for exterior and interior surfaces and ordering samples! We’re aiming for rich textures for a stimulating environment, but also durability as our units will have a high turnover rate as residents move back into the community. We’re also pushing towards our Stress Test in May, where we will present our design, a tentative budget, some early construction documents, and mock-ups. Naturally we have begun talking about funding, framing strategies, structure, and mechanical. As far as design, we are refining our unit plan and detailing our storage wall ,while drafting different siting options. We’ve saved our most exciting update for last! Drumroll, please. All five ladies that lived in the enhanced independent housing on our site last semester are now out living in independence with their families, loved ones, or on their own! Some of whom have accepted jobs! And as of last week, a new resident moved in and we cannot wait to meet her. Cheers and thanks for reading. -- source link
