Happy Holidays from the Homes Team!Last week, as promised, we hit the ground running. Our mid-year review, Soup Roast, is fast upon us — this Friday! Needless to say we faced some daunting challenges that we’ve been putting off for months, like taking showers and snapping a decent family photo. We began the week with some kitchenette mock-ups. Our design, per unit, will include a full fridge and freezer, a microwave, a single burner stove top, a sink, and counter space. We concluded the exercise with a linear kitchen set-up with ADA clearances, a natural organization of appliances, and plentiful counter space for meal prepping. The kitchen and the meal are a staple of independence to the women that will live here, so this space is especially meaningful to our design. In addition, we went through our hundreds of unit plan designs to date. We diluted them to their strongest ideas, and combined those qualities into a new plan - “Dirty Beat”. The front door to Dirty Beat is in an inset porch where every woman can personalize their entrance space with plants or furniture. It opens into a kitchenette with a large front window, which looks across the site at the towering Water Oaks. Beyond the kitchenette is the flexible living room and bedroom space. A thick core wall divides the living area from a spacious bathroom, working as a threshold between spaces and as an integrated fixed storage system. Optimizing storage in the units is a priority to our client, Dr. John Dorsey. At the end of the unit is a large inhabitable window nook and a door to a private outdoor porch. Here, women can read, meditate, sun bathe, and enjoy views of the diverse canopy of the site. The dimensions of Dirty Beat successfully allows for all six units and a community space to be aggregated across the short length of our site’s buildable area. Our next step is to begin aggregating these units on the site in different ways. We will analyze how different women may occupy their space differently. We will start to design the community and laundry piece, and we will begin proposing ground and roof conditions. Wish us luck as we work towards Soup Roast! We hope to see tons of familiar faces there! -- source link
