The Evermore Grimoire: MythologyMjǫllnir is the hammer of Thor, the God of Thunder, in Norse Mythology. It was used both as a devastating weapon as well as a divine instrument to provide blessings. The hammer was Thor’s primary weapon. However it was no ordinary hammer; whenever Thor cast it at an enemy, it returned to his hands like a boomerang. The sound of the thunder was perceieved as being the sound of his hammer crashing down on his foes. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that the Old Norse name for his hammer, Mjöllnir, probably meant “Lightning.” -- source link
