Throughout her summer internship, Shannon O’Malley has been digitizing sampled case files of veterans housed at the Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, located in Hampton, Virginia (see catalog entry here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/562694). One of her many interesting finds can be seen here: the discharge papers of United States veteran, Patrick Sliney, who served in Company C 1st D.C. Volunteers, and was discharged from service on March 6th, 1866. These sampled case files are diverse, holding not just discharge and intake paperwork, but fingerprint sheets, marriage certificates, naturalization records, personal letters, medical records, and death certificates. All case files from this series will be digitized and available in the catalog over the course of the next few months. We are grateful to Shannon for her important work in making these rich genealogical resources available to the public. Want to learn more about our holdings?
