Prosit! Happy International Beer Day. What better way to celebrate than to spotlight America’s oldest brewery, D.G. Yuengling and Sons. Founded in 1829 by David G. Yuengling, an immigrant from Wurttemberg, in Pottsville, PA, Yuengling survived Prohibition and rose to national prominence in the 1990s to become one of the largest producers ale, lager, and porter in the United States. Our document featured here is an 1871 tax assessment for a business license showing a $100 payment made by DG Yuengling, Brewer of Pottsville. This payment was made necessary by the passage of the 1862 Internal Revenue Act which was meant to raise much needed revenue for the Civil War. Besides imposing a tax on income, inheritance, and luxury goods, the act also levied a tax on business licenses for bankers, wholesale dealers, jugglers (yes, we did say jugglers), and brewers.Today’s post was written by Patrick Connelly, Acting Director at the National Archives at Philadelphia.Citation: Tax Assessment Lists, Pennsylvania, Box 632-1, Record Group 58: Records of the Internal Revenue Service, National Archives at Philadelphia (HMS ID: PH-3060), (NAID: 4713107) -- source link
