Throughout her summer internship, Amy Carr has been working on digitizing lighthouse tracings and drawings from the Fifth U.S. Coast Guard District, which includes drawings from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C, Pennsylvania, and Bermuda (see catalog entry here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/594403). One of the many drawings she has digitized can be seen here: a representation of the layout of the Keepers Dwelling at the Cove Point Lighthouse in Maryland. The Cove Point Lighthouse is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County. The Image depicts the elevation as well as the floor plan for the foundation, first story, and second story of the dwelling. The lighthouse was built in 1828, originally using eleven Argand Lamps with 18 inch reflectors. By 1855 the lamps were replaced with a fifth order Fresnel lens, which was later upgraded again to a fourth order lens in 1857. By the 1880s the Keepers dwelling was enlarged to provide enough housing for two keepers and their families. Keepers continued to live at the station until 1986 when the light was automated. The Cove Point Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay and remains an active aid to navigation. This document and the other hundreds of drawings that Amy has digitized will be available in the NARA catalog over the course of the next few months.Want to learn more about our holdings?
