congenitaldisease:People in many culture have been modifying their teeth for several thousand years and for numerous reasons. Vikings, for example, carved lines deep into the enamel of their teeth. Skeletons at several Viking-era burial sites in Sweden and Denmark have shown evidence of such carvings. The motivation behind the carvings is unknown but one theory is that they represented some kind of achievement. “Maybe they were brave warriors who got a furrow each time they won a battle or tradesmen who travelled together,” said an archaeologist. Another theory is that the Vikings simply found the appearance aesthetically pleasing and gave them a more terrifying appearance. -- source link
