amnhnyc:Say “thanks” to Lestodon on National Avocado Day. Why?Because giant ground sloths, like Lestodon, ate avocados whole, traveled, and then pooped—depositing the pits in new locations. Most mammals couldn’t handle large seeds, so it was up to these 15-foot (4.6 meter) animals, and other megafauna, to disperse (and fertilize) avocados. Giant ground sloths went extinct about 13,000 years ago, but the avocado lives on. The fossil skeleton pictured can be found in the Museum’s Hall of Primitive Mammals.☺️Photo: © AMNH (at American Museum of Natural History)https://www.instagram.com/p/CDT1QgbA-JT/?igshid=fobefim8ea3lthanks beb :) -- source link
