copperbadge:artist-sargent:Edwin Booth, 1890, John Singer SargentMedium: oil, canvasIt always feels necessary to remark that this was the brother of John Wilkes Booth, but I feel like there should be space made to talk about the fact that Edwin Booth was clearly destined to play Sherlock Holmes and it’s a tragedy he died before the invention of blockbuster cinema or artisanal television miniserials. [Description: A full-body portrait of Edwin Booth, done in warm dark tones; Booth is standing hip-cocked with thumbs in pockets, wearing dark trousers, a long tailcoat, a waistcoat and a wide black tie. His face seems to glow out of shadow with heavy brows, a high forehead, and and a long narrow nose. He looks extremely pensive and dramatic as one might expect.]Other people have noted the resemblance as well. There’s an entire novel (“The Surrogate Assassin” by Christopher Leppek) which posits that Holmes and Booth were cousins (plausible, as Booth’s mother was born Mary Ann Holmes). -- source link
