sugar-factory: All photos by Rick Ochoa - shot in August 2013 in Brooklyn, NY I remember so clearly the time I spent with Rick. We first met at his apartment, the blue building with the pink fire hydrant, as he described it. We walked from his place to his friend’s empty apartment for our shoot. I was wearing my kimono over my dress and Rick took this really cool photo of me in the aisle at the corner store. We bought snacks and beer. We stuck mostly to shooting in the kitchen where the lighting was best, drinking our beers and listening to music. We took several smoke breaks and talked. The cicadas were buzzing loudly outside. We took photos until the sun went down. That night we had dinner and walked around the neighborhood, mostly just to buy more beer. We sat on his stoop until late in the night. I felt calm even though I was terrified of New York. Rick gave me a room to myself for the night. He left me a copy of his keys and told me to come and go as I pleased, just to remember to lock the door before leaving. I returned to Rick’s apartment twice before I left New York. I remember the night Megan and Olivia were at his place. We talked and laughed and had dinner together. I slept in the room again that night. The room with the white lace curtains and Rick’s instruments and book collection. When I returned to the west coast I really missed hopping on the G train to Rick’s apartment. I missed the friends I’d made. Upon my return I shared some tragic news with Rick. I don’t know why I felt comfortable opening up to him, I’m usually a private person. He gave me honest and helpful advice that shed new light onto my situation. I’m planning a return trip to New York and I can’t believe I won’t be seeing Rick. We won’t be able to take anymore photos together. And I won’t be able to say goodbye to my friend. RIP Rick Ochoa. I’ll never forget the time I spent with you. Your friend, Sugar <3 -- source link
