ea-solinas:iky-iky:Gandalf`s courage in The Desolation of SmuagGandalf was such a selfless hero in this. Because he chose to go down to Dol Guldur and face the Necromancer AKA Sauron the most dangerous villain in Middle-earth at the time. The thing is I’m not sure if Gandalf knew for certain himself whether the Necromancer was Sauron, I reckon he was unsure but he wanted to deal with this threat as even Galadriel said something along the lines that the Necromancer may not be what he seems. As Gandalf was travelling with Radagast he realised he would have to make a choice, go to Dol Guldur and face this powerful evil or help his friends the Dwarves and Bilbo to reclaim Erebor from Smaug the dragon. Meaning he’s thinking should I choose to help my friends face the dragon, or go to face something so dangerous that it could put the whole world in darkness? He obviously had to make a difficult choice as both threats are dangerous, but he made the right choice as he attempted to neutralise the Necromancer so he wouldn’t be able to rise in full power, as that was the more important choice. Ok he failed as he lost that fight and was imprisoned in Sauron`s hanging tight cage which looked so damn uncomfortable. But what mattered was he tried to do what was right, even though he failed, Gandalf is a good man or I should say Wizard. Remember he even told Radagast the Brown to not comeback for him as he needed him to deliver a message to Galadriel, so he`s thinking if I do fail they need to know what I’m doing and what the threat is, if I succeed then I would be very fortunate and blessed and I have beaten this evil for the better of the world. Gandalf also has now seen Sauron`s growing strength as he saw the legions of Orc armies going forth to battle, he probably feels so bad that he failed to destroy this evil Sauron and the world is in grave danger now. I hope in the next film Galadriel and The White Council comeback for Gandalf and save him, and rid Dol Guldur of Sauron. As it seems very probably that it will happen, also it is in The Lord of the Rings book appendices that something like that happens. Anyway Gandalf will escape whether by help or by himself, because as we all know in the films and in the books he`s in The Lord of The Rings as he plays a major part in the future stories to the Hobbit. One more thing, I think Sauron didn’t kill Gandalf because he wants him to suffer, sort of like what Bane did to Batman by imprisoning him. Bane`s motive: Your punishment must be more severe. You can stay alive and watch the world burn, which will destroy all hope for you and your people; you will die suffering in mental pain as you are helpless. Mwahaha.I know that’s so evil. :-(Well, Sauron’s boss Melkor/Morgoth had a tendency to chain people on mountaintops. Maybe Sauron wants Gandalf to watch as he begins razing Middle-Earth, in a sort of sadistic gesture? After all, he doesn’t know that Radagast went for backup. It seems appropriate that the most hobbity of the wizards is the one that is overlooked by the evil creatures. -- source link
