Swipe/click/scroll to see the design process for “Once More with Healing” (my latest t-shirt printed by @threadless, and 3rd Prize winner of their Curse Words Design Challenge), because nobody keeps asking me how I create my work: 1.) I’m renowned for the precision and finesse of my thumbnail sketches. Actually, you’d be surprised how helpful they are and how much I refer back to them. 2.) Tracing paper is indispensable as I work my way though multiple attempts to simplify complex shapes while retaining their character. 3.) The more complete my preliminary drawing is, the less painful the final execution will be. (my reference candle was made by @mithrascandle) 4.) I find things less overwhelming when I batch my tasks, such as drawing all my shapes before even thinking about color. 5.) Crystal is an unusually challenging surface to represent, so I lean on plenty of reference and a methodical approach. 6.) Since I don’t use outlines, my colors need to be carefully chosen to create the right contrasts. 7.) All my shapes are similarly simple, but I can simulate light on both shiny and matte surfaces by adjusting the light/dark values in adjacent shapes. I hope this has gone some way towards demystifying a process that nobody has ever mentioned finding particularly mysterious.
