Just finished The Young Warriors 少年杨家将. I found it a little slow-paced for the first two-thirds of the series mainly because I didn’t really care for most of the romance in this series but the separate focus on different members of the Yang family really built the characters and relationships to a degree that got you invested, particularly for the fourth, sixth and seventh Yang sons. I rather enjoyed the affection between the brothers including their eighth sister, who is pretty heroic and brave in her own right. Then came the last few episodes which were absolutely, soul-crushingly tragic. The tragedy is that, while the Yangs are a closely-knit family, their patriotism towards the Song dynasty takes greater priority and they ultimately become sacrificial pawns in a greater conflict that sometimes has nothing to do with protecting the common people. Of course, I started this series because of Hu Ge and I wasn’t disappointed. He looks so delicately pretty here. He is young and doesn’t have the kind of maturity that he has now as an actor but his screen charisma is already very apparent. Also, there’s a vulnerability to his performance that suits the emotional arc that Yang Yan Zhao goes through. -- source link
